Community Meeting to Improve Safety on Homestead Road
03/25/2024

Protecting your children as they walk or bike to school along Homestead Road in Sunnyvale is the focus of an upcoming VTA community meeting.

The in-person meeting begins at 6 p.m. on April 3, regarding the Homestead Road Safe Routes to School Improvement Project. Community members are invited to learn more about the project and provide comments and input on the proposed project improvements.

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs promote walking and bicycling to school through infrastructure improvements, safety education tools, and other incentives. The Homestead Road SRTS project proposes to upgrade pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure along 1.5 miles of Homestead Road, from Grant Road in Los Altos to N. Stelling Road in Sunnyvale.

The work will improve safety for students who walk and bike to West Valley Elementary School, Cupertino Middle School, and Homestead High School. This project came about after local residents expressed concerns about the conditions for student bicyclists and pedestrians.

A study done in 2019 found that locations within the project area have higher concentrations of collisions involving bicyclists and pedestrians.
