VTA has reached a major milestone in efforts to ease traffic congestion at the Mathilda Ave. interchange in Sunnyvale, closing a small section of Moffett Park Drive between Mathilda Avenue and Bordeaux Drive. During construction, travelers are encouraged to use Innovation Way as an alternate route, which now has traffic signals to better accommodate higher traffic volumes.
This closure will enable the Westbound SR 237 off-ramp to be realigned in order to improve traffic along Mathilda Avenue. Those travelling through the area can expect to see changes including roadway excavation, paving, and new striping.
The short section of Moffett Park Drive between Mathilda Avenue and Bordeaux Drive will remain permanently closed to vehicles, allowing for a bicycle and pedestrian path that is slated to open later this year. The bike/ped path will extend from Mathilda Avenue to the Borregas Avenue Bike/Pedestrian Bridge.
Additional changes in the project area include new US 101 on- and off-ramps at Mathilda Avenue, with new traffic signals allowing drivers to make left and right turns. New bike lanes and sidewalk improvements along Mathlida Avenue are also forthcoming.
