Reconstruction This Summer for US 101/De La Cruz Boulevard/Trimble Road

The US 101/De La Cruz Interchange, in San Jose, is getting a much-needed makeover beginning this summer as a 2016 Measure B-funded project. VTA and the City of San Jose, in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), will begin the reconstruction of the US 101/De La Cruz Boulevard/Trimble Road interchange.

The purpose of this project is two-fold. It will help improve traffic flow and enhance safety for vehicles merging onto southbound US 101 from the De La Cruz Boulevard/Trimble Road interchange. And it will upgrade mobility and safety for bicyclists and pedestrians traveling over the highway and by the interchange ramps adjacent to the San Jose International Airport.

Despite the current lower traffic volumes due to the effects of the pandemic, the 60-year-old interchange does not meet current design standards in an area that continues to experience increased growth-producing higher traffic volumes during normal conditions. Increased congestion along the Trimble Road/De La Cruz Boulevard overcrossing is due to the lane reductions from six-lanes to four-lanes on the north and south sides of the overcrossing. Safety is also a main concern for bicyclists that must merge and share lanes with vehicles across the bridge structure with a minimal buffer between the walkway and the roadway. The proposed improvements will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Replacing the existing US 101 overcrossing to provide additional lanes and accommodate bike and pedestrian facilities.
  • Widening Trimble Road to six travel lanes through the interchange.
  • Reconstructing the southbound exit loop to a partial cloverleaf design. incorporating a new intersection on De La Cruz Boulevard.
  • Configuring the interchange and surface street improvements for multi-modal uses, including pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Reconstructing the intersection of De La Cruz Boulevard/Trimble Road and Central Expressway to provide bike lanes, and additional through and turning lanes.
  • Adding a Class I bikeway along the west side of De La Cruz Boulevard from Seaboard Avenue to Central Expressway.

With this $70 million project completely funded by a combination of VTA 2016 Measure B funds, local funds, and SB1 funds, construction is scheduled to begin this summer. VTA encourages those interested to visit the project website and “Subscribe for Updates”. A virtual Open House will be scheduled before the construction begins. Project subscribers will receive an invitation to the virtual Open House once a date and time are scheduled.
