Overview
The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), in cooperation with the City of San Jose and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), proposes to reconstruct the US 101/Trimble Road interchange and to widen Trimble Road between De La Cruz Boulevard/Seaboard Avenue and Central Expressway in the City of San Jose and City of Santa Clara. Objectives
The purpose of this project is to improve traffic and enhance safety for vehicles merging onto southbound US 101 from the De La Cruz Boulevard/Trimble Road interchange in the City of San Jose, and improve mobility and enhance safety for bicyclists and pedestrians traveling across the interchange adjacent to the San Jose International Airport.
Project Features
The proposed improvements include, but are not limited to the following:
- Replacing the existing US 101 overcrossing to provide additional lanes and accommodate bike and pedestrian facilities.
- Widening Trimble Road to six travel lanes through the interchange.
- Reconstructing the southbound exit loop to a partial cloverleaf design incorporating a new intersection on De La Cruz Boulevard.
- Configuring the interchange and surface street improvements for multi-modal uses, including pedestrians and bicyclists.
- Reconstructing the intersection of De La Cruz Boulevard/Trimble Road and Central Expressway to provide bike lanes, and additional through and turning lanes.
- Adding a Class I bikeway along the west side of De La Cruz Boulevard from Seaboard Avenue to Central Expressway.
Environmental
The project is Categorically Exempt under Class 1 of the State California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) guidelines. A Categorical Exemption is the appropriate level of environmental review for the project.

Scheduled construction activities require a weekend closure of the southbound loop on-ramp to US-101 off De La Cruz Blvd. The on-ramp will be closed from 5:00 AM Saturday, 12/17 to 5:00 AM Monday, 12/19. Detailed construction notice here.

VTA, the City of San Jose, the City of Santa Clara, and Caltrans held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on-site to celebrate the official opening of the new and improved interchange. The event took place on the newly constructed pedestrian/bicycle underpass path, providing a firsthand look at the enhancements designed to benefit both motorists and non-motorists alike.
