Project locations are in the City of San Jose at the southbound (SB) US-101 diagonal on-ramp from eastbound and westbound Story Road (Location 1) and SB US-101 to SB State Route (SR) 87 freeway to freeway connector ramp (Location 2).
The freeway ramp widening improvements, ramp metering equipment, and other Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are intended to gain additional throughput on the existing freeway and provide enhanced traffic monitoring capabilities.
At Location 1, the project proposes the following improvements:
- Widen the existing diagonal on-ramp to add a standard 12-foot High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane;
- Restripe the adjacent Collector-Distributor (C-D) to SB US-101 to add a standard 12-foot HOV lane.
The improvements involve restriping, pavement widening to add the HOV lanes, extending a reinforced concrete box culvert, and installing new ramp metering equipment.
At Location 2, the project proposes to widen the existing freeway to freeway connector ramp to provide two standard 12-foot mixed flow lanes with standard inside and outside shoulders.
The improvements involve restriping, pavement widening, reconstructing a lined drainage ditch, and installing new Traffic Monitoring System (TMS).
